Other great news is that my parents actually know a South African official in Greece. This might make for interesting travelling, and I am eager to contact this person and establish some kind of relationship.
I also stumbled upon a Globe Trekker episode (on the Travel Channel) that covered a lot of Italy, so I am now more fired up for this trip than EVER!!
